we're the face of a new generation NAME | Shen Fei-Long we're the ones with no reservation HEIGHT & WEIGHT | 6’2” | 180 lbs don't give a damn about your cold calculations
|
✚ He’s very innovative and loves thinking of new ways to do things and solve problems.
✚ Underneath Shen’s intimidating, almost thuggish exterior lies a very intelligent mind. It’s often ignored because of the façade he likes to present to people.
✚ Despite Shen’s intimidating visage, he’s surprisingly very charismatic and finds it easy to sway people to his side when they actually listen to him.
✚ Since Shen is so charismatic, it’s only understandable that he is also very suave. It comes as a shocking surprise to most people who think he’s nothing but a thug based on his appearance.
✚ Shen’s upbringing has made him very honourable. However, he only adheres to his own personal code of honor. Any other code of honor or set of ethics and rules are subject to as much bending (or even breaking) as he needs or wants.
✚ It’s very difficult to earn Shen’s loyalty. However, if one succeeds in that daunting task then they’ve earned a loyal comrade for life.
✚ Shen is unusually resilient. It goes hand-in-hand with his optimism and innate stubbornness.
✚ Shen has always been very observant, and being on the sidelines in his youth only enhanced that. Very little misses his scrutiny.
✚ If there’s one thing Shen has learned, it’s how to be adaptable and adjust to any situation thrown his way. [/ul]
NEGATIVE TRAITS |
- One of the things that Shen loves the most is having complete control over something or someone. This love of control has led to him becoming extremely manipulative.
- He is very vindictive and loves to hold grudges for long periods of time, as his sister can attest to.
- Like most firebenders, Shen is very competitive and loves a challenge. This is especially true when it comes to matters of martial skill and combat.
- As a prince, Shen is used to giving orders. As such, he tends to be domineering. Thankfully, he’s mellowed out a bit because of his life experiences.
- Don’t let Shen’s extensive collection of scars fool you because he is as vain as a peacock. He wouldn’t be wearing all those decorations on him otherwise, memento or not.
- Shen has the nasty habit of being nosy and butting into other people’s affairs, using his title as Prince to justify his need to know everything interesting happening around him.
- Being as arrogant as he is, Shen can’t take being one-upped or passed over for someone or something else if it isn’t in his plans.
- Unsurprisingly, Shen is stubborn. In fact, he’s as stubborn as the stereotypical earthbender. Once he’s set on a course of action, it is very difficult to divert him from it.
- If you stand in his way or somehow manage to trigger his temper, he can be very vicious. When combined with his vindictiveness, it is a sight to behold. [/ul]

BENDING ELEMENT & SUB-BENDING | Firebending (Blue) | Heat
SKILLS | Practically a master at firebending, Shen’s fighting style still resembles the standard firebending style taught in the Fire Nation to the untrained eye. However, those who are very skilled in the art or in discerning the different styles of bending would see that there are significant differences in form that arose due to learning under the Sun Warriors. In his firebending, he has this tendency to pull in and wrap around the flames to his limbs like armor to enhance his strikes rather than just shoot them out, though he does do that as well. He has also begun to incorporate the movements and philosophies of other bending styles into his own bending. He is also skilled in different forms of martial arts that were also taught to him at the palace before he left, but he’s much better with the unarmed ones.
Shen is particularly gifted in heat manipulation. His time with the Sun Warriors has allowed him to gain enough insight and experience with heat to figure out what he could do with this skill and master it. He’s mastered it to the point where he can freely manipulate the amount of heat around him through simple breath (as in breathing in and out). He also uses it to increase the heat generated by his flames by siphoning the surrounding heat from the environment or from other sources. In fact, his favourite form of firebending involves combining his flames with heat manipulation to create an unpredictable, dangerous art form.
Shen prefers to go fight hand-to-hand whenever possible and is unusually physically strong for a firebender (almost –but not quite- at par with an earthbender), but when forced to he’ll take up a weapon, usually tekko-kagi or tonfas. He is skilled in the use of tekko-kagi, but he hasn’t mastered the use of them yet. He is also well-versed in the use of tonfas as it complements his firebending, but he only uses that while masquerading as Seiryū. As Seiryū, he restricts himself to weapons and rarely resorts to firebending at all, and when he does it’s the normal style of firebending. He’ll only his natural fighting style of hand-to-hand with firebending only as a last resort because he knows that his style and flames are very distinct.
WEAPONS | In his civilian identity of Tai Lung as well as his true identity as Shen Fei-Long, Shen a pair of karambits hidden inside his sleeves just in case he needs something sharp to fight and disable people with. However, his actual main weapons are a pair of tekko-kagi, which is often hung around his waist when not in use.
As his alter-ego Seiryū, Shen wields a pair of tonfa. He also has three pairs of daggers hidden on his person that are usually placed on his legs, arms, and torso that he only uses when he cannot use the tonfa.
PET | Xun the Mongoose Dragon. He serves as pet, mount, and sometimes even bodyguard and part-time babysitter for Shen.
your skin is burning at the sight of me
HISTORY | Around eighteen years ago, a bouncing baby boy was born into the Fire Nation’s royal family with quite a bit of fanfare and celebration that seemed to be a requirement whenever a child is born to the ruling family. His mother named him Shen after one of her favourite characters in her favourite story.
[/tbody]
The people at the palace ensured that the young Shen was surrounded with warmth and love at first, even though he wasn’t the heir. The fascination of having a new child in the palace soon wore off though, leaving him mostly by his own devices by the time he was four. Shen was already exceptionally observant even as a child, so it didn’t take him long to try and find a reason why that his young mind could understand. From what he could understand, everyone paid more attention to his older sister Ren because she was the heir and therefore more important. That had to change.
At first, he tried acting out and throwing tantrums in order to get their attention since it was the only way he knew. However, that only got him scorn and a reputation as a brat in the palace. After a year of trying and failing with that method, the young boy decided to change tactics and observe his sister instead, trying to figure out why she was picked as the heir maybe make his dad change his mind when he beats her at whatever the reason was. This time, he thought that the reason was better skill in firebending and combat.
With a new mission in mind, Shen managed to convince his parents into letting him start his combat training early with a combination of tears and a promise to behave. Upon starting his lessons, he and his tutors quickly found out that he had a great knack for firebending. However, the same couldn’t be said for the rest of the combat arts, specifically those relating to weapons like swords. That didn’t stop him from trying his best to learn everything he could and outshining his sister, starting up a rivalry with her in the process. It didn’t help that Fire Nation tradition encouraged these sorts of rivalries, making it even more fired up than it was.
The rivalry cooled off for a couple of months into its second year after the infamous assassination attempt on the Fire Lord that his sister stopped. In these few months, Shen actually viewed his sister as a hero for saving daddy from those bad people, especially since she lost an eye in the process. However, that brief period of hero worship soon faded back into even more resentment and animosity when it earned her more preferential treatment and special training.
Shen wasn’t about to let that pass, of course. He let his resentment and animosity drive him to continue his training with a zeal that bordered on obsession, something that seemed very disconcerting on a seven year-old child, especially when it lead to the exclusion of almost all else. His mother tried to correct his odd behaviour and tried to make him relax and enjoy his youth like the other normal kids, his father and tutors only encouraged his current behaviour and the rekindled rivalry, thinking that it would be good for the both of them to have someone to compete with.
This continued on until Shen was 13 and Ren was 18, wherein she was finally allowed to serve in the military. By this point, Shen was considered the Ghost Prince because of his tendency to be reclusive due to his unwavering focus on his studies, while Ren was still the palace darling. The rivalry between the two was as strong as ever with Shen still gunning for the heir position. Forays into the battlefield weren’t about to stop them from continuing with the rivalry. However, it soon became apparent that along with her age and experience advantage, she had gained another in the form of war participation, wherein she was hailed a hero for her actions in the war.
Not one to be outdone (again), Shen disguised himself and snuck into an airship with the intentions of joining the war himself and winning glory for the Fire Nation. However, his plans would never come to fruition because they were ambushed by a battalion of Earthbenders and their own airships before they were even fully out of their own territory. Shen tried to help, but he was utterly useless in a ship-to-ship war. Hell, he was even locked into a room as a form of virtual house arrest (complete with a “We’ll deal with you later, kid”) by the presiding officer when he tried to help by revealing his identity and issuing orders.
The earthbenders were successful in bringing the airship down, however they weren’t able to follow it to its crash site. They figured that no would have been able to survive the crash anyway, especially not with the explosion and all of that smoke and ash they’ve seen, so they just left it alone.
However, contrary to their expectations there was one survivor- the stowaway prince. Severely burned in many places and barely clinging to life, but still alive nonetheless thanks to the reinforced room that he was locked in, which was the sturdiest on the airship. A couple wearing strange clothes and face paint happened upon the crash site and the injured prince just before he fell unconscious. He wasn’t awake for it, but the couple took pity on him and immediately carried him back to their tribe to treat his wounds.
It took a full week before Shen awoke again, this time covered in herbs and bandages on some straw mat bed. As much as he wanted to complain about the accommodations –he was a prince, not some lowly street rat- he didn’t because frankly he was lucky to be alive. Instead, he introduced himself as Shen Fei-Long, prince of the Fire Nation, which surprisingly garnered only a chuckle and a “Figures” comment from the man, whose name he later came to know as Iman.
It took a few more weeks before he could even stand up again due to the severity of his injuries, and in that time the Bulan, Iman’s wife, chatted with him and traded stories as she nursed his wounds in order to keep his mind away from the severe damage wrought to his body. To Shen’s shock, he learned that she was from the legendary Sun Warrior tribe, the first people to ever learn firebending from the dragons… who were supposedly extinct. That piece of information alone was enough to distract him while she or her husband were there, but when he was left alone… he could only think about the fact that he was lost, with no idea how to get back to his family or even tell them that he was still alive. Not only that, but he also thought about how his ambition to beat his sister and gain his father’s favour lead to him becoming a scarred shell of a boy that couldn’t even stand up, let alone bend fire.
Only the prospect of eventually being able to stand and walk again kept him from spiralling into despair. That and the company of the couple were the only reason why Shen hadn’t taken his own life in shame for this perceived dishonour. With their help coupled with his determination, he was able to stand and walk again within a few months. Once he was able to do that, they let him mingle with the rest of the tribe after introducing him to the chief and the council of elders and making him promise that he wouldn’t run off and tell everyone about them- not that he even could, anyway, but that wasn’t the point.
It was a shock for the prince to have looks of disdain directed his way because he was an outsider, but it was even more galling for him to know that his title had absolutely no worth to the tribe. Hell, he was treated as scum barely worth scraping off the bottom of their sandals. It’s rather sad that he preferred that treatment over the looks of pity that most others gave him upon hearing his story and seeing his extensive scars, as it infuriated him more than looking into a mirror that disastrous first time after removing his bandages.
The treatment, coupled with his slow recovery, loss of muscle mass and seemingly inexplicable loss of ability to firebend when he found out that the most he could do was let out a puff of flame with his strongest effort, made him spiral into depression. Suicidal depression. Not even being able to finally run and do stuff on his own again was able to snap him out of his funk. One day he had enough of everything and decided to go to a secluded area in the forest to commit suicide with a knife he had hidden away in his pocket, only to be stopped by Iman and Bulan in time.
He received the scolding of a lifetime from the two of them, and when he tried to argue that there was nothing left for him in the world and that he was pretty much useless now, they shut those arguments down very quickly. They then told him that all he needed was a change in perspective, to see the world in a different way because life was still worth living. They certainly didn’t want to waste all of their efforts in saving him from that wreckage. After that scolding, they then kept constant watch on him in fear that he might do it again.
It was easy for Shen to sneak away though, when the two were called on important tribal duties and they left a much less thorough replacement to guard him. He went to the forest to try and commit suicide again, only to be stopped by the sight of a young Mongoose Dragon running away from an Armadillo Bear. He figured that saving someone was a better way to die, so he recklessly lunged after the Armadillo Bear with his knife to protect the Mongoose Dragon. Surprisingly, even without his firebending he managed to kill the bear with the reptile’s help, though he managed to sustain more injuries in the process.
Shen then decided to try and kill himself another day and instead just drag the Armadillo Bear carcass back to the village, surprisingly with the Mongoose Dragon helping him along. Iman and Bulan were in for a shock when they saw their charge –who they began to see as their own kid- come back bloody with an even bloodier carcass of a bear and a Mongoose Dragon following him like an obedient dog. After scolding him yet again and treating his wounds, they cut up the Armadillo Bear and served it at the village dinner that night while the Mongoose Dragon disappeared back into the woods.
For the first time in Shen’s life, he was the center of attention as the members of the trible asked him about his encounter with the bear after Iman bragged about it like a proud dad. It didn’t take him long to open up a little bit and start telling his story while smiling for the first time in months. It seemed that he’d won a little of the tribe’s respect that day, but that wasn’t enough to stop Shen’s plans.
Once he was healed and the couple let him out of their sight again, thinking that they could trust him not to try and kill himself, he ventured into the forest again for his third attempt. However, this time he was thwarted by the Mongoose Dragon he had saved earlier, who had wrestled the knife out of his hands when it saw that he was going to do something stupid. This then devolved into a wrestling match that Shen somehow ended up winning by blinding the beast and trapping it in a submission hold that it couldn’t escape without breaking its bones. Shen then had the chance to kill it and then himself… but he didn’t.
Instead, he simply laughed. “I get it. You win.” He said that day as he let go of the Mongoose Dragon and dropped his knife. The scolding he received when he went back that day was worth it, because he knew he’d made a friend in the Mongoose Dragon that he named Xun.
After getting Xun, he decided to focus on getting his former strength back. That included his firebending. Shen talked to Iman about it and found out that his loss was due to the fact that he lacked the drive to firebend now that all the resentment and hatred was pretty much gone from his system. Now that he actually wanted to live –though he didn’t know what for yet- he asked him how to get back his firebending. Iman reluctantly recommended that he take the trial from the firebending masters, Ran and Shaw.
It was something to live for, so Shen took the challenge. At the trial, Shen journeyed to the original firebending masters’ cave, where he found out that they were two honest-to-Agni dragons. Ran and Shaw deemed him worthy to learn the true meaning of firebending and engulfed him in a vortex of multicoloured flames. This experience opened Shen’s eyes to the true meaning of firebending as well as showed him how petty and shallow he had been in his former life, causing him to tear up.
After he had passed the trial, the tribe truly accepted him as one of their own with no reservations. Shen then spent the next few years in the tribe, learning their ways and becoming much better than he had ever been both physically and mentally back in his old life. He gained many new friends and enjoyed life there, thinking that he had no way out of there anyway. It was there that he figured out how to produce the blue flames that became his signature trademark among the tribe, as well as how to manipulate heat itself. Heck, he even managed to get the strength and skill necessary to wrestle and kill an Armadillo Bear on his own.
However, his time with the Sun Warrior tribe soon came to an end when he was 18. That was because Iman and Bulan finally admitted that they knew the way to civilization the entire time. Shen didn’t feel betrayed at all by their admission though, since he had grown to prefer being in the tribe. However, thoughts of the present state of the rest of the world grew too much for Shen to bear, especially when he heard about the worsening war. As much as he hated to do it, he felt that he had a duty to change the world himself as the bearer of the Sun Warriors’ teachings and as a prince of the Fire Nation.
So with a heavy heart, he decided to depart from the Sun Warriors’ tribe. He promised them that he would keep their secret and that he would come back someday, which his many friends and his stand-in parents accepted reluctantly. So with Xun by his side, he set off for the nearest village from the ruins.
It didn’t take him long to find the village and establish a new identity for himself as Tai Lung. This was where he had heard the full story of the world and its worsening condition, which only solidified his decision to try his hand at changing the world. He didn’t want the crummy throne anymore; no he had his sights set on a much grander purpose: forcing the rebirth of the world through fire. The only way he could do that is if he had a foothold of power in neutral territory, so as soon as he readjusted himself to living in civilization he set off for Republic City.
Two months after arriving in Republic City and getting over the massive culture shock, he settled in the city as a chef and bartender in a shady bar in one of the poorer districts in town. Meanwhile, he had taken up the identity of Seiryu and started enticing people to his cause while pretending to be good ol’ Tai Lung during the day. Time will tell if he would be successful in his endeavours.
