Not long after her birth, her father died of pneumonia. He left her family with enough money they weren't forced to live on the streets though. She grew up living frugally, but comfortably. She and her mother had enough to live on well enough, but not have much for excess. All her life, Jin's mother instilled a fear of nearly everything in her. As she grew, she realized a few of the fears were silly and had no basis. It gave her enough confidence to undertake the process of moving out on her own. Because of her mother's overbearing nature though, that process took nearly two years. In the end Jin was successful, and moved into a loft apartment in Republic City before the war escalated to the point she would not have been able to.
